Electric vs. Hybrid: The Real 100km Cost Test

Electric cars and hybrid cars both promise lower running costs, but the real answer depends on how you use the car. While an EV runs purely on electricity, a strong hybrid uses a petrol engine supported by an electric motor. On paper both are efficient, but the 100km cost test shows a clear difference.

Let us start with an electric car. In real Indian driving, many mass-market EVs use around 14 to 16 kWh of electricity for 100km. If you charge at home and your electricity cost is around Rs 8 per unit, the basic energy cost is about Rs 112 to Rs 128 for 100km. Add some charging loss and the practical home-charging cost is usually around Rs 130 to Rs 150 for 100km.

Home charging gives EVs their biggest cost advantage

Home charging is the most economical way to refuel your EV.

Public charging changes the equation. Fast chargers can cost much more than home electricity, often around Rs 18 to Rs 25 per unit depending on the network and location. At those rates, the same EV may cost roughly Rs 270 to Rs 400 for 100km. That is still competitive, but the big EV saving comes when most charging happens at home or office.

Now look at a strong hybrid. If a hybrid delivers 20 to 25 kmpl in mixed city and highway use, it needs about 4 to 5 litres of petrol for 100km. With petrol prices around Rs 98 to Rs 107 per litre in many cities, the 100km cost works out to roughly Rs 400 to Rs 535. A hybrid is clearly cheaper to run than many normal petrol cars, especially in city traffic.

So, on pure running cost, the EV wins. A home-charged EV can be nearly three to four times cheaper than a hybrid over 100km. For someone driving 1,000km a month, that difference can become meaningful over a few years. EVs also feel smooth, quiet and quick in traffic, which makes them attractive for daily city use, especially among EVs under 20 lakh.

    Maintenance and Ownership

EVs have fewer moving parts, but buyers should check battery warranty, tyre cost, charger installation and service support. Hybrids have both petrol and electric systems, but strong-hybrid technology from brands such as Toyota and Maruti Suzuki has built a reliable image in India.

    FINAL VERDICT

    Which One Should You Buy?

Choose an EV if you have home charging, high monthly running and mostly city use. Choose a hybrid if you want lower fuel bills without charging dependency.

For low monthly driving, also compare petrol and CNG options because the higher purchase price of EVs and hybrids may take longer to recover.

    Summary of Cost Advantage

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is an electric car cheaper than a hybrid for 100km in India?

A: Usually yes, if charged at home. A home-charged EV can cost around Rs 130 to Rs 150 for 100km, while a strong hybrid may cost around Rs 400 to Rs 535 depending on mileage and petrol price.

When does a hybrid make more sense than an EV?

A: A hybrid makes more sense if you do not have home charging, travel frequently on highways or want better mileage without changing your refuelling habits.

Is public charging still cheaper than petrol?

A: Often yes, but the saving is smaller than home charging. Public fast charging can cost two to three times more than home electricity.
